Silver + Black

art/retail inititive by Asahi Beer and Melbourne based Urchin Associates (urchin.com.au).

The exhibition opened with a bang last Thursday and will be open until Saturday 8th May at the hidden away Ambush Gallery in Waterloo. Art pieces displayed amongst purchasable items which are art pieces in themselves. A very exciting space. Retail spaces as curated art galleries is something we will witness more of in the Australian retail arena. In this instance of Silver + Black, we have the art space turning into a retail space, utilising the display elements that already exist in well designed retail spaces. The consumable good as an object de art, a piece of inspiration.

"The intention of Silver + Black is to bring together artists who share a common way of looking at the world. These artists, regardless of their chosen fields, find beauty in imperfection, appreciate simplicity and see potential beyond the ordinary. "

This well curated exhibit and product offering considers the idea of wabi-sabi, the Japanese way of finding beauty in the inperfect, and in unexpected moments.
Big names in art and retail involved. DC shoes and Casio watches were asked to contribute- on the provisio that their piece didn't include their product, forcing them to really get to the bottom of their brand values and ideals.

"DC's piece "The Way of the Skater" embraces the idea of process and commitment, highlighting the elements a skater may discard through his practice of refining his technique - endless days and nights of repetition until perfection is achieved"
