Book Club

I just finished reading "Wonderland Avenue", an autobiography of Danny Sugerman. Sugerman hung out with the Doors as a 13 year old, with Jim Morrison as his surrogate big brother. By the age 21, Sugerman had a multi million dollar house and the fastest cars money could buy, influence in the music business and Iggy Pop as his house guest. Sugerman also had a deadly heroin habit and was quickly and surely killing himself. His doctor gave him a week to live. This book gives us some jaw dropping accounts of a 1970's rock and roll lifestyle (and some VERY entertaining situations involving Iggy Pop) and a visceral look at the effects of substance abuse. The book was written in 1991, when Sugarman was clean. He died in 2005 of lung cancer.
